Let's Talk Pokemon: Nidorina
The Let's Talk Pokemon series is a source for more in depth information about the Nidos that you can find in the games. I call these articles "Let's Talk Pokemon" because for all intents and purposes, I hardly ever do on this site, at least in relation to the games. This may not be fascinating new news, but as the largest Nido site, Aqua Bunny should be resourceful as well as fun.
Overview
Nidorina is a lagomorphic or rodent like Pokemon that begins to show features
of rhinoceros (to a much milder extent than Nidorino). Like Nidoran Female, Nidorina has spots on her backside, and large floppy ears. Unlike Nidoran, however, she loses her whiskers and her horn, for the most part, seems to disappear. She has three claws on both her hands and feet. The barbs on Nidorina extend when she senses danger, and are poisonous to the touch. Nidorina generally has a calm and caring nature, taking care of its young by chewing the food for them. They are relaxed around family, and become nervous if separated from their kind.

The Pokemon Anime
Emily's Nidoran ♀, Maria, along with Ralph's Nidoran ♂, Tony, have both had a major role in the episode "Wherefore Art Thou, Pokemon?". The episode itself is reminiscent of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the names of the Nidoran being a reference to Arthur Laurents's West Side Story. At the end of the episode, Tony and Maria kiss, which causes them to evolve into Nidorino and Nidorina, respectively. Throughout the episode, both the male and female Nidoran, as well as their evolutions, lack model consistancy, with artistic errors appearing here and there. Sometimes this is as often as the next scene right after the last.
The gym leader, Whitney, uses a Nidorina to battle Ash in "A Goldenrod Opportunity". However, she's essentially defeated as soon as she comes out of the Pokeball (more or less).
The closest thing to a major role that Nidorina ever had to date was in "The Heartbreak of Brock", where she happens to be Temacu's leading Pokemon. Nidorina is not shown very often, however, at least not compared to Tony and Maria from an earlier season.
Pokemon Adventures (Pokemon Special) Manga
Green (Blue in Pokemon Special) had a female Nidoran named Nidory (Nido-chan (ニドちゃん) in Pokemon Special) who would eventually evolve into a Nidorina, and then a Nidoqueen.
Yamashita 4 Koma Manga
Nidorina is used in a number of humorous situations, and appears quite often along side Nidoran Male and Nidoqueen. In the stories that involve the Nidoking/Nidoqueen family, Nidorina plays the straight man to Nidoqueen's antics. In other stories (that usually involve a trainer), she plays a typical role of a young lady obsessed with vanity.
Name Origin
Information comes from the Japanese Wikipedia:
Nido, written in katakana as ニド, comes from the english word needle (in Japanese, ニードル ). The suffix -ina is an Italian feminine diminutive.

Miscellany
Nidorina and Nidoqueen cannot breed. Or can they? Afterall, the games aren't exactly known for their consistancy, and often contradict themselves in other ways within one generation's time alone.
