This comic was created before the anime was even out, so it's interesting to see how up in the air the popularity of any Pokemon could have been. I always said that Nidos at least had an easier time getting themselves out there when there was only 150 of them (and not Mew and the other, I dunno, half of GS they initially planned to include) and not over 700. Heck, they were doomed after the second generation, really. So to see Nidorina essentially play the role of a bully over, I dunno, Gengar or Charmeleon means that it couldn't get any more blank slate and equal opportunity than this.

I should ALSO mention that this was during a time where "Pokespeak" hadn't yet been fully established, and when the series didn't try to pretend that Pokemon are substitutions for real world animals (and while it still doesn't, they make it more and more grey each generation as if they almost want to outright replace animals but don't quite have the heart to, probably because Pokemon are too humanlike by their own admission). Then again, even the anime was very different early on, it was really gag-like and a lot more suited for Japanese audiences than they way it is now, written more universally. The monsters slowly becoming (obvious) expies for animals rather than merely similar to is apparent in the early anime and games themselves, too.

Okay so this is really editorial and specific to AB, but the protrayal of Nidorina found on these four pages? Yeah, that's exactly how I thought they were supposed to act (that and the anime episode where she mauled the Tauros who stabbed her in the Flame Pokemonathon didn't help). Mean and brutish. That's why I created Nidorina from Poke Tales to begin with, to be the antithesis to these supposedly grouchy creatures. Of course, turns out I projected and the Pokedex says a generation later that they're actually really non-violent, nuturing and kind of timid. Whoops. But I guess that factoid just made the rest of the Nidorina characters easier on me.

Beware of angry comments. Anyway, I dislike this commercial. Or any commercial with the sophisticated modern woman and the neanderthal who can't tell his head from his arse. So very tired of them. What the heck happened to all the men in America? Nevertheless, for some reason it was on my mind, and a gag similar to this came up. This isn't a "Take That" towards the commercial (it doesn't bother me that much), but more of a cute sincerity that would come from Nidorina. Done with cool grey Prismacolors and inking pens (I love these items).

People sometimes ask where I get my inspirations/material from. Simply put, about 80% of it comes from real life. Case in point, the cafeteria where I get my lunch has flavor syrups you can add to soft drinks/tea/juice. You can also get soda water/club soda/seltzer water straight from the dispenser. So I mixed together caramel flavored syrup and soda water. It made me think about the idea of a caramel drink, and then just straight melted caramel, and I knew which character to assign that thought too. Also, caramel flavored soda is actually very... ah, unique.

Lisa's been around for a long time now, but hasn't really had anything to show for it. I figured it was as good a time as any to help you all get to know her a little better. The point of this comic is to show just a bit of the relationship between father and daughter, and just maybe, it's a little sweet too. I've already decided a while ago that Lisa and Kent's relationship is one built on respect, support and trust. Lisa has selective work ethic to be sure, but she's more than willing to help her dad out without being asked. She also just plain enjoys his company. That may make Lisa a bit of a daddy's girl, but I feel like there aren't enough functional families in entertainment. Dysfunctionality is tired and predictable. Besides, Lisa has her quirks without being a brat.

I got my inspiration from a commerical. It's just that easy, folks. Another opportunity to learn your Lisa. The real point of the comic is that while Lisa is usually reserved and quiet (Tuff is usually the boisterous one), there's two things that make Lisa, erm, noisy? Excitable? First off, it's competitive video games. Any game with a competitive mode, beatable records or leaderboards, she gets rowdy. Secondly, it's anything she's a fan of. Mega Man, Adventure Time, whatever. She can't contain her geekiness, so she gushes. In school she's better behaved and keeps to herself, but her ears will still perk up.

I can't wait to see this at the Art Institute of Chicago. The Japanese collections gallery is missing this key piece of heroic history. Also, this picture I drew is meant to be more of a comic, less plain old fan art, so that's why it's here. Fun Fact: The picture was conceptualized to have Sentret replace George Washington crossing the Delaware, beating up a shark or alligator or something. And then I remembered "oh yeah, Sentret's Japanese, that wouldn't make sense". At least I'm consistent.

Well, Blade Knight inc. as Jojo did die a teenager, so there's that. I know people have written/drawn worse things than this. I really enjoy how bizarre this whole thing is. It's just crude enough, it's weird and it definitely reads like something Blade Knight inc. would write, and best of all, I'm just riding it for laughs. Death Reaper JOE's line gets me each time I read it, it's so frank.

It's not that Nidorina doesn't have better things to do than await Nidorino's return (or in this case, meet him there), but Nidorino is her favorite person in the world to be with. The heart wants what it wants, man. This is a little OOC in that she'd never leave her children unattended, and if she left them with Nidoran and Nidoran, this would still have been planned earlier and not last minute.

This one is weird because Nidorina's out of character in a different way. If this were based on early Poke Tales, when Nidorina was snappier and defensive, then this comic could work. However, Totodile appeared in Legends, and Nidorina mellowed out by this time, realizing the world wasn't out to get her. Her treatment of Psy seems more like early Tales Nidorina, so while it's not beyond the scope of her behavior, it feels like a regression here. Anyway, the point is that what Nidorina's willing to do for her son's childhood and prolonging that innocence is something she would totally do in any era.

This is perfectly in line with a Poke Tales short. I'm also quite proud of Nidorina's matronly anime look. She looks huggably adorable, if not a little too wide canonically.

Nidorino, you evil, beautiful man, you. It's been said over and over that Nidorino is really attractive (the most attractive of the Nidorino characters skewing effeminate rather than burly), which aids in Nidorina's obsessive attraction to him. However, leading her on like this, knowing she'll bite and then walking her right into a laser-light slaughter? That's cold. Cold like a laser.

What works for the gander might not necessarily work for the goose. Nidorina's also very attractive, even if it took her a long time to see that in herself, but Nidorino's usually unfazed by Nidorina's advances. Plus, he just pulled this stunt moments ago, Nidorina. This is my favorite of this grouping of comics, because it's the most like Poke Tales/Legends. The comic is mostly about Beedrill, Nidorina and Needles are just in it, and the whole "a story for every Pokemon" was the point of the series, afterall. Nidorina couldn't be in more character, here. I also like the shot of the Green Town street. It's minimal, but it shows that this advanced world belongs to these Pokemon.

During my mission to collect all kinds of tutorials to try out for no other reason than to expand my skillset, I've come across many that were less than helpful. This short bit is essentially a "comic imitates life" work. I remember seeing one that didn't tell you how anything was done at all. It was basically sketch, flat color, draw over your lines, and finished, and this was for a very detailed comic style human, so the jump is drastic. With people being way, way harder to draw than animals (arguably, I've seen plenty of art where the animals look tacked on and derpy (and some with Pokemon, even, and they have cheats!) but the humans are really solid), I'd think you wouldn't want to skip the steps between 3 and "4". Anyway, yeah, saying "add details" tells nobody anything. With what? The power of positive thinking? That all being said, there's still plenty of good tutorials, I just thought this was a funny observation.

Nidorina is cute here. One thing to note is some model inconsistencies. Sometimes Nidorino has six spikes ala the Red/Green Sugimori art, sometimes he has his standard five. Sometimes Nidoran has a tail, sometimes she doesn't. Sometimes she has some actual anatomy (! Find her in Celadon, for example), sometimes she's just in blob form like the anime. I won't even get started on how Nidorina changes all the time. Anyway, take the best pics where you can get them, I say.

This is the cutest version of Eevee I've seen, I think it's because his head is fatter with the cheek instead of thinner, and the eyes are rounder and not straight up parallel and symmetrical (which is a total yawn), not to mention shorter compared to later versions. I also think I like this one because he looks like the adopted one from Poke Tales ("of course he does, Pat 9_9").

Lazy nighttime post-pro effects go. Hey, the scan didn't really pick up the pen shading of the paper original, and cleaning up spiral bound ruled paper comics is hard enough as it is. This is why I opt for remakes, better quality product all around. Although, with remakes you may run into problems where I'm more set in my ways about drawing favorites than I was at the time of the originals, and then you run into problems like stories regarding Pokemon battles taking years to complete whereas the child version of me would've blazed through it because "Pokemon, yeah!!!!"

Torn between not wanting to explain the gag and knowing I have no choice because of the lack of context, Master Criminal Mr. Mime is, like the Psychic Butterfree, one of the oldest characters in the series starting with the game Poke Island. However, he's more slippery than a greased-up Goomy and has never ever been caught, having escape plans so cunning it makes Dr. Wily look like he was turning himself in and failing each time. So him "finally" being caught is a big deal, even if this is one of those non-continuity gags.

While I'm sure these comics existed long before the concept of Pokemon rescue teams and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon was even a passing thought in the minds at Gamefreak, I do feel like Team Pika and Bug Squad could today be considered two rival rescue/exploration teams. Except the Bug Squad wouldn't get all that far.

After cleaning Bugged About Bugs, I decided I wasn't doing that again anytime soon. However, I found this comic in my file archives for the old Creative Worlds website (before the redesign). I suspect a few of you might remember this one, but it's new to many more. And, I can see why I scanned it back then. This one still makes me laugh. It's insane.

Only two pages in and you can immediately tell the difference between Poke Legends and Alternate Universe. Alternate Universe, despite being hosted and remade here, was never really a Pokemon comic and it's more of a video game mishmash with characters who became a lot more developed the longer I worked with them. Poke Legends is all Pokemon, all the time, with cast members and background characters of all kinds of Pokemon.

I have to provide some context before anyone thinks Nidorino is a moron. Before Nidorino married Nidorina, he lived as a wild Nidorino, so none of these things ever really had any significance or meaning to him beyond... possibly the equivalent of wild Pokemon's high school. His current lifestyle started as a self impossed obligation to provide for his new family (which caused him some frustration, but that's a later point). He is, however, very smart, but not exactly house broken, I guess? That said, I probably still overdid it with the idiot ball a bit. Nidorino makes a far better moral compass than a homemaker.
