Let's Talk Pokemon: Nidoking

The Let's Talk Pokemon series is a source for more in depth information about the Nidos that you can find in the games.

Fast Facts

Overview

Nidoking
Nidoking appears to be a kaiju-esque creature that includes features from various mammals and reptiles or dragons. The trademark ears that make his species unique are still present. While he keeps three claws on his hands, he has now been reduced to a single, shovel like toe. His protruding fangs have become an underbite, as well. Nidoking's horn has further increased in size, and is just as powerful as Nidorino's, if not more. The real power, however, lies in his bulky physique. His tail alone can break bones and transmission towers, along with snap telephone poles as if they were matchsticks. He specializes in melee combat. If he flies into a fury, he becomes an unstoppable force.

In Other Media:

The Pokemon Anime

Gary Oak is shown to own a Nidoking, but he does not appear as ofetn as Nidoqueen. Various other trainers own a Nidoking, but the role Nidoking typically plays is rather small and often negligible.

However, one notable role for Nidoking includes the father of a Nidoran Female and Nidoran Male who gives chase to Team Rocket in "In The Pink". Togepi uses metronome to keep everyone safe from the angry Nidoking, and eventually he is subdued.

Humorously, in "Showdown at the Oak Corral", Nidoking is seen coming on to Cassidy, who just happens to be in a Nidoqueen costume at the time.

Pokemon Adventures (Pokemon Special) Manga

Giovanni owns a powerful Nidoking, similar to what can be found in the games. He also uses it outside of battle to destroy the foundation of his former gym. Red has also caught several of them in the Safari zone, a bit like how Ash caught several Tauros in the banned episode "The Legend of Dratini".

Yamashita 4 Koma Manga

Nidoking assumes the role of a father and husband in his appearances. Despite Pokedex entries declaring Nidoking to be rather ruthless, here he is shown to be a nice guy, and cares for his family. The gags tend to be at his expense.

Name Origin

Information comes from the Japanese Wikipedia:

Nido, written in katakana as ニド, comes from the english word needle (in Japanese, ニードル ). Everyone should have a basic idea what 'king' means.
