Let's Talk Pokemon: Nidoran Male
The Let's Talk Pokemon series is a source for more in depth information about the Nidos that you can find in the games.
Overview
Nidoran Male is a lagomorphic or rodent like Pokemon, with distinctively large ears, incisor teeth, spots, and is noticably a lot thornier than any other Nido, as seen on along the back and the ears. Nidoran also has two claws on
both his hands and feet. The horn on the male's head secretes a poison when jabbed into a foe, and is primarily used for its own protection. It is said that Nidoran with larger horns tend to be more toxic. Nidoran's large ears are capable of pivoting to any direction, which allows him to check his surroundings, as well as detect a potential threat.

The Pokemon Anime
Emily's Nidoran ♀, Maria, along with Ralph's Nidoran ♂, Tony, have both had a major role in the episode "Wherefore Art Thou, Pokemon?". The episode itself is reminiscent of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the names of the Nidoran being a reference to Arthur Laurents's West Side Story. At the end of the episode, Tony and Maria kiss, which causes them to evolve into Nidorino and Nidorina, respectively. Throughout the episode, both the male and female Nidoran, as well as their evolutions, lack model consistancy, with artistic errors appearing here and there. Sometimes this is as often as the next scene right after the last.
The only other appearance of note for both Nidorans Female and Male is in the episode "In The Pink", which also happens to be in the same season as "Wherefore...". Team Rocket uses Lickitung to chase the rather timid Nidoran into a cave. However, the tables are turned on Team Rocket when Nidoking comes out with a vengence.
Pokemon Adventures (Pokemon Special) Manga
For the most part, the male Nidoran have only made appearances as a background Pokemon. There is, however, a trained Nidoran that belongs to Wilton, a fisherman who may be remembered by the con the Green tried to pull on him.
Yamashita 4 Koma Manga
Nidoran in most, if not all of his appearances make him out to be young and rambunctious. He's shown to have angry eyes most of the time, and even some of his takes can be as outrageous as Nidoqueen's.
Name Origin
Information comes from the Japanese Wikipedia:
Nido, written in katakana as ニド, comes from the english word needle (in Japanese, ニードル ).
In simplified Chinese, the name Ní Duō Láng (尼多郎) opts out of the usage of the character 蘭 (Ran), particularly because it has a feminine identity. Lang (郎), however, has a masculine identity.
