Had this idea in the holster for a while now, existing as a thumbnail drawing. Drawn with pencil, colored with Prismacolor markers and colored pencils, outlined with colored pencil. And I dunno why, but when drawing the boy, all I could think of was Skippy Squirrel (Animaniacs). No references to anything were used, though, except for the thumbnail (which looked roughly the same in style).

I don't have as much time to draw as I used to. I ended up doodling some basic Nidos on paper in pen one day, so I just scanned them in. Might as well not let them go to waste, and something's better than nothing!

Trying out something new with both drawing and coloring. The design is a little more elongated and upright. I also wanted to add a subtle fur texture that wouldn't distract too much.

When's the last time I drew a Nido so close to The Pokemon Company's model? If nothing else, it just goes to show that I very well could, but I'd rather not make a habit of it. As for the subject matter, this was done as an art trade (a Nido for a Nido, of course), with a theme that honestly never even occured to me. That certainly says a lot about how much I hang out with the characters of the site, now. Still, I took it as an opportunity to try some hatching, while utilizing only Nidoran's base colors as the palette. About halfway through, all I could think of was the Mushroom Hill Zone boss.

Some time ago I made this picture trying to actually utilize Prismacolor markers the right way. I don't like how you have to get the first coat down in one shot, it's not practical unless you're filling in a box. Anyway, here's a cute Nidorina kid for ya.

This Nidorina loves scarves, and wears them often, even when it isn't all that cold out. In fact, scarves tend to be the only thing she wears! Because of that she's earned the nickname "Scarf Girl." She doesn't mind the nickname, though, since it fits her well.

Suzi has the power of Aura. She and her brother... the pic itself I would have to say I've messed up one of the arms making it a little longer. The shading is pretty good it took me 3 hrs to get right.

This is one of my Pokemon from Soul Silver. Her name is Utamu and she's an awesome Nidorina.

She lost her right eye battling the Red Gyarados (now in my possession) in the Lake of Rage. Utamu seems to have hold a grudge against the Gyarados (now named Atrocia) and they fight whenever they are together; the fights are particularly nasty because of her Ability, Rivalry, so they can never be in the same party.

Despite her love of fighting, she has a Docile nature; she's pretty motherly towards the other Pokemon in the group, as she's also the oldest member.

The original picture is 2.5x3.5 and it was done in pencil and tweaked in Photoshop CS2

She was supposed to be lying in some kind of light source, probably the sun, in a lazy dog/cat sort of fashion (used a flopped over rabbit as an anatomical base reference, however). I think the original lineart suggests this better.

A picture that I'm sure everyone else cares more about than me, and that includes people who haven't even seen it, and those who'd tell you that they don't. Done during the time of the Pokemon Variations meme, which I personally don't care for, I hold a slight contempt against this picture for wasting a weekend. That aside, it does look nice, I guess, and well thought out. I planned to create a definitive Nidorina Variations before someone else got to it (or didn't) with too much of a non-chimeric, personally projected skew, because I guess I care more about Nidorina getting a good representation than my own personal opinion of it all. Sometimes you just have to do things for the cause, and I think it may have succeeded on that end, at least on Tumblr.

There's a good blend of mammal-like monsters and non-mammal-like monsters that should give some insight into what I feel best represents Nidorina as a whole, based on actual — albeit old — research. Toxic Ooze and Royal Guard, however, are just silly extras. On that note, I intentionally wanted the picture to have a non serious, more animated look to it. A lot of variations are painted more realistically, but for Nidorina, in true Aqua Bunny tradition, I felt that a light hearted, more cartoon like approach would do more for public interest than a nice looking painting that's only remembered for being nice looking, and does nothing for character perception. Watch out. Always an ulterior motive with this guy.

I had to get into the right frame of mind for this. I didn’t want to just pile on a bunch of overcomplicated crud for its own sake, so I thought “how would Game Freak reasonably* handle this”? Looking at many different Mega Evolutions as examples, I noticed some trends. Several Pokemon borrow elements from previous evolutions to connect them together a bit more, so Megaqueen’s eyes go back to red, her mouth is hooked like Nidorina’s and her ears gain more points going back to Nidoran/ina.

Then I thought “well, she’s considered the ‘Drill Pokemon’ so…” I figured she might be built for digging or excavating. The additional thorns or spiky extrusions are mostly for that exact purpose. Her tail also looks like a drill, even if it doesn’t function that way.

Finally, I figured something had to be done with the faux bikini, so I went more for a female warrior route, because I can see that also being a thing. The Mega Evos could be considered more warlike, or built for battle, aside from digging stuff. Plus, it brings her a little more in line with Nidoking. So there it is, the thought process using a few theories of creature design.

*As much as I’d rather see it go a more Kaguya Hime route. I still think Nidos have some unspoken association with the moon, I mean, moonstones aside, they’re lumped with Clefairy and Jigglypuff in the National Dex, but I have a hard time visualizing a reasonably designed maiden-like Nidoqueen. Plus Gardevoir.

Are you familiar with Beach boys music? As a child, I was convinced that the lyrics to one of their songs were "Ran Ran Nidoran, I Nidoran." Shows what a one-track mind I had back then... and still do, to a degree. ^^;

The Bacterians are getting desperate. Or maybe it's Nidoran's Riding Viper? The designs and coloring have inspirations from Salamander/Gradius II's Tetran, the cleaner Otomedius Tetran with coloring inspiration, pallete inspiration as well as the orb tentacles from Salamader 2's Tenny Rop, and some added weirdness ala Viva Core from Parodius. The name Tetoran is just how Tetran is spoken in Japanese, but comes mostly from the Gradius V soundtrack listing. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you should leave this site and pick up any game related to Gradius. They're ALL far more entertaining than Pokemon.

An alternate angle...

Wasn't sure whether this should be in FAN ART or PHOTOS, but considering the subject is drawn using the sidewalk itself as the canvas, and a phone as the "scanner", I decied to put it here. This is how you know a person has gone off the deep end, when they start doing street art or their favorite characters. It looked a lot better in person, as some of the details are lost and Nidoran Male is harder to see, but at least it's perserved here (as it rained several minutes later that day). Check above for another angle, maybe you can make it out a little better.
