Let's Talk Pokemon: Nidorino
The Let's Talk Pokemon series is a source for more in depth information about the Nidos that you can find in the games.
Overview
Nidorino is a lagomorphic or rodent like Pokemon that has also developed the anatomy of a rhinoceros. Nidorino loses the incisor teeth in favor of fangs, and the size of Nidorino's horn and barbs increase (although the number of barbs decrease). He still has the trademark floppy ears that the Nido family has, although he can stiffen them to check the surroundings. Nidorino has three claws on his hands, but only two on his feet. Nidorino is known to be irritable, and will choose to fight when faced against an adversary. It will charge the enemy at full force, secreting venom from its horn if it succeeds in stabbing the enemy. Nidorino can also shatter a diamond with his horn.

The Pokemon Anime
Nidorino and Gengar appear in to have a battle in the first episode, based on the opening of the original Red and Blue (Green) games. This makes the both of them the first Pokemon that you see not only in the games, but also in the anime, if you don't include the title sequence.
Emily's Nidoran ♀, Maria, along with Ralph's Nidoran ♂, Tony, have both had a major role in the episode "Wherefore Art Thou, Pokemon?". The episode itself is reminiscent of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the names of the Nidoran being a reference to Arthur Laurents's West Side Story. At the end of the episode, Tony and Maria kiss, which causes them to evolve into Nidorino and Nidorina, respectively. Throughout the episode, both the male and female Nidoran, as well as their evolutions, lack model consistancy, with artistic errors appearing here and there. Sometimes this is as often as the next scene right after the last.
Nidorino is also seen as a companion for Temacu's Nidorina in "The Heartbreak of Brock". However, his role is laughably small and single note.
Pokemon Adventures (Pokemon Special) Manga
A couple of Nidorino's appearances are used as capture fodder when Red teaches children how to capute Pokemon. In one instance during the Fire Red and Leaf Green arc, Red insists on having a child use a Gengar to battle it, creating yet another reference to the opening sequence of the Red and Blue (Green) games. It is strange that Red would use Nidorino as an example Pokemon for children to capture, as realistically Nidorino seems to be the kind of Pokemon that requires an experienced trainer, what with having a diamond piercing horn and being poisonous all over.
Yamashita 4 Koma Manga
When Nidorino is featured in the domestic comedy type strips, he appears to blend into the background much like Nidoran Female, but visually appears to have the same traits as Nidoran Male. In his solo appearance, he verifies the Pokedex flavor text in smasing a diamond, which Nidorina... physically disapproves of.
Name Origin
Information comes from the Japanese Wikipedia:
Nido, written in katakana as ニド, comes from the english word needle (in Japanese, ニードル ). The suffix -ino is an Italian masculine diminutive.
